Hmm, good points. I was thinking along the lines of
the large array of pre-prepared nasty stuff he was
throwing around.
It all depends on the timing... at that point in time,
yes, he was helpless. But by then Willow had already
gone all dark mojo on him. If Willow had never
embraced the Dark Side, do you think he could have
been taken like that? Or would somebody be dead from
a big hunking axe to the back?
Well, I guess it would all depend on what mood the
writers were in, now wouldn't it... (bitter voice)

It's power escalation, pure and simple. It's a
problem in a lot of fantasy settings. If you
introduce too many powerful entities, you have to
start coming up with reasons for their not *doing*
much of anything with that power, except at very
selective times :)
I doubt that the writers had any idea that the coven
existed until the finale, or close to it. They
probably just made it up, like they've admitted they
made up a lot of the rest of the mythology behind the
show as they went along. <Sigh>
And yes, any watcher worth his salt would have
counseled and taught Willow, not reacted with
magiphobia and told her to stuff it. As it was,
Willow was pretty much self-taught. Jenny died before
she could help much, and Tara was too googly-eyed over
how powerful Willow was. <gag> Don't get me wrong, I
*like* Tara... there was just something subtly off
about the way W/T was portrayed.
