Yeah, but he seems to be running the show. Remember, he was running his
own carpentry crew as far back as "The Replacement" and was a foreman in
"Life Serial". I don't think he really has to be worried about being
embarassed if he gets a call and has to dart into the school for a
half-hour. Buffy already had brought him up to speed, and he seemed
quite eager to help. (He certainly had no problems once the call
actually came, right?)
I can't see a problem with Buffy, en route to the basement, calling
Xander to tell him "Dawn's being attacked by some zombies in the
basement! I'm going to get her out!" Even if Xander doesn't come along
(which, of course, he would), it's important that he be kept up to date
so that, if need be, he can call in Giles and Willow...er, Angel and
Cordy...er, Riley and Oz...er, Tara and Anya...well, okay, good point.
Still, I think the whole thing reeked of "we need Xander upstairs to
smash the talisman, so he can't come with Buffy. Besides, we don't want
him seeing Spike this soon." If you construct an entire plot device to
have Xander be on the scene (eternal construction project at the
school), you might as well make use of him, no?
