Part Two

Seeing Buffy laying lifelessly on her side, Willow ran the
remaining steps down to her friend. Her stomach churned violently as
her eyes began to tear. "No, Buffy!" Willow breathed as she gently
raised Buffy's head with shaking hands, the blood soaked blond hair
sticking to the slayers cheek. Buffy moaned painfully as Willow
lowered the slayers head into her lap. One of Buffy's hands clung
weakly to the point of the stake that protruded grossly from her
stomach. "Sorry! Ohhh gees?" Willow stammered, the tears flowing
freely down her cheek. "Buffy I?"
"What happened?" Willow turned to see Giles running from his car that
he had gracefully parked partly on the curb. He hadn't bothered to
turn the car off or close the door. Zander sat with his door open as
well, fighting a losing battle with the seat belt, yet the entire
scene
seemed so very distant in that moment to Willow.
<HELP!> Her mind screamed at her. <They can help!>
"Giles, we?"
"Willow, is she?" the normally composed Watcher's voice had begun to
crack as he reached the two girls.
"Giles, we gotta do something!" Willow looked pleadingly up
into the Watchers eyes, her own filled with tears. "I just came out
here and she was like this. She won't wake up, and there's blood
everywhere and?" she let the sentence die not trusting her own voice.
"Yes, well?" Giles started, running his fingers through a
tangle of graying hair as he looked around hurriedly. His eyes
settled
for just a moment on Zander who now stood beside him starring down at
his friends. "Willow we've got to get her to a hospital. Help me get
her to the car Zander."
Zander stood with his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his
mouth open and eyes wide with shock. It was as if he hadn't heard
Giles. "Zander," Giles nearly yelled into his ear.
"Huh?" he stammered as he was pulled from his thoughts.
"But Giles, I don't think we should move her! If the bleeding
starts again-"
"And if we don't she will die Willow!" Giles gently raised
Buffy into his arms and began walking steadily to his car, trying
desperately not to jar the wounded slayer, blood instantly soaking
into
his shirt and tie. Buffy's head and limbs dangled lifeless with her
mouth open and eyes closed.
<She looks dead already.> The thought had forced its way into
the watchers mind. <Just hold on Buffy. You'll be fine. >
"Just hold on Buffy!" he heard his voice mimic his thoughts, a
tear rolling unnoticed down his cheek as he gently laid her in the car
and turned to Willow and Zander. "You two go to Joyce, I mean, well
ah, Mrs. Summers and bring her to the hospital." Giles stumbled
clumsily over his words as his got into his car.
"No problem." Zander said. "Come on Wills!"
"NO!" Willow pulled her hand from Zander and started toward
the
car. "I'm going with Buffy."
"Then get in! And hold tight to her. We must hurry!" Without
argument Willow climbed into the car and took the limp slayer in her
arms.
"Right, I'll just go get Joyce and meet you at the hospital
then." Zander added as the two sped away. "I'll be the message boy
while my friend finishes this whole dying thing." <She'll be okay
Zan! >He heard his thought shadow the sarcasm. <It's not the first
time she's scared us like this. That Buffy, what a jokester!>
Willow sat holding Buffy in her lap as Giles, weaving in and
out of traffic, raced toward the hospital. "Ah, Giles," Willow
sniffled as she ran a hand through the tangle of Buffy's
hair. "Giles"
"What is it Willow? Is Buffy?" his words trailed off as he was
forced to make a sharp right to avoid a head on collision.
"It's the police!" She announced turning in her seat to look
at their pursuers. "The police are after us!" she whimpered.
Two more blocks. He thought as he took a look into his rear
view mirror at Sunnydales finest. "We're almost-" before he could
finish the cop car rammed them hard.
"Bloody Hell!" Giles had to cut the wheel hard to miss a light
pole while Willow whimpered softly with worry. "Is Buffy still
breathing?"
"Hurry Giles, I don't think she's gonna make it! Ohhhh, the
wound is bleeding again! " Just as they reached the hospital a car
pulled out in front of them, forcing Giles to break hard. Their
pursuers weren't able to stop in time causing them to run hard into
their rear. It took a moment for them to collect themselves but then
hurriedly, Giles took Buffy into his arms once again and started
toward
the hospital. Mere steps from the door he heard that corny word,
freeze.
"She's wounded!" He yelled back to the cops who stood, weapons
poised. "If she dies?"
"Freeze or we shoot!" He heard one of the rent-o-cops yell.
"Then shoot!" he hissed under his breath, still walking toward
the entrance of the emergency room. "This girl is wounded very badly
you blundering idiot. We can deal with whatever I have done later!"
Willow opened the door, still making whimpering sounds of
worry, and began yelling for someone to help them as the cops stood
dumbfounded in the distance. Immediately a couple of nurses came
running to them. The one took Buffy from Giles while the other, when
she saw Buffy, began yelling out orders, and took off down one of the
hallways.
The cops, seeming to have regained their composure were
standing beside Giles and Willow in moments. The taller one had a pad
in his hand as he wrote furiously. <Tickets! I can't believe this.>
Willow thought as she walked slowly to a cluster of seats that lined
the eastern wall. Giles laughed throatily when the shorter cop began
to cuff him, rattling out his rights.
"You're arresting me?" he asked through his laughter. "How
can
you?"
"-everything you say can, and-" the officer stopped and an
older gentleman approached.
"Are you the one that brought in the um?" the doctor paused
for
a moment, seeming to search for the right words, "the impaled girl. I
believe her name is Buffy."
"Well, yes." Giles said as the cop tightened the cuffs. "Is
she going to be alright?"
"We're not sure. She has?" the doctor paused and looked at
the
two cops as if he was seeing them for the first time. "What's the
problem officer?"
"This gentleman," the taller officer began.
"Well, I'm sure it is just a horrible misunderstanding. You
see this gentleman most probable saved a young girls life this
morning. So I'm sure two fine officers such as yourselves could find
it in your hearts to over look any little discrepancies he may have
committed on the way here."
"I'm not sure if?"
"I don't think you are listening to me." The doctor said,
putting his hands in his pockets. "Take the cuffs off."
"But he destroyed our car and?" Without finishing his protest
the shorted cop began to take off the cuffs. "Yes sir." In moments
the cuffs were off and the doctor bid the men goodbye. Rupert stood
dumbfounded at what he had just witnessed. Why and how the doctor had
kept him out of jail was beyond him.
"Is Buffy okay?" Willow's voice drifted to them weak from her
seat across the room. "She is okay isn't she doctor?"
"I assure you that we are doing everything in our power to
save
her, but I'm afraid that there will be some damage that we cannot
undo." The doctor walked over to Willow and places a comforting hand
on her shoulder. "We will know more in a couple of hours dear. Try
not to worry."
"How did you do that with the policemen?" Giles asked joining
the doctor and Willow. "I don't understand. Did you use hypnosis?"
"Would you rather be in jail?" The doctor ventured.
"Of course not, but?"
"We all know that the policemen here aren't the brightest.
There is nothing magical about that. They simple need a point in the
right direction sometimes. Besides, the short one is my nephew!"
"I see." Giles took a seat beside Willow.
"There is a waiting room just around the corner here. You and
your daughter here can wait there if you'd like. As soon as Miss
Summers stabilizes we will inform you."
"Of course," Giles offered his hand as he stood, "and thank
you!" The doctor shook his hand and turning disappeared into the
workings of the hospital. "Let's go Willow." Willows blood soaked
shirt and pants stuck sickly to her body as she stood to follow Giles
to the waiting room. Her emerald eyes red from the tears she had
cried
for her friend. Some of her already red hair had turned a darker
brown
and clung quiet unceremoniously to her cheek with the dried blood.
* * * * * * *
Zander's run slowed to a walk as he entered the waiting room.
He stopped for a moment as he looked around the waiting room until he
saw Giles and Willow sitting in a pair of chairs in the back. Giles
sat with his elbows on his knees, his fingers interlocked. He had
rolled his sleeves up unevenly and loosened his tie. Large dark brown
spots covered his cloths from the dried blood. Willow sat next to
him,
hugging her legs up to her chest as she stared through tear-filled
eyes
into a place that no doubt wasn't the waiting room.
"So," Zander began, an uncomfortable smile gracing his
countenance. "Where's the Buffster. I brought her some cross shaped
chocolates and garlic scented roses!" he force himself to chuckle
lightly at the joke, but quickly let it die when neither Giles nor
willow joined the fun. "You okay Wills?" he asked as he sat down next
to his friend. "Have the doctors?"
"No." she said simply, shifting here gaze from a distant place
to the floor as a new tear trailed down her cheek.
"I'm sure she's fine." Zander offered. "I mean its Buffy
we're talking about here. You know, superpowers, saving the world
Buffy. She'll be new in no time.
"There was so much blood Zander and she wouldn't wake up. I
couldn't wake her up!" For the first time Zander noticed Willows
cloths. Her entire front was still wet with the slayers blood.
Strands of her red hair were now a dull brown from the drying blood.
"Zander, where is Joyce? Giles glanced up to look at Zander
through reddened eyes. His heart sank at the thought of the Watcher
actually crying. Buffy had been hurt before. She had even died, but
Giles had never been so, so?
"Zander, Mrs. Summers?" Giles said, forcing himself into
Zander's thoughts.
"Oh yeah, Joyce. She wasn't home. I would have waited but?"
his voice trailed off as he once again took in Willows countenance.
"Just be sure to call her." They all slipped away to their
own.
The three of them sat there in silence, waiting for some news on
Buffy's condition.
"If she dies," Willow broke the silence, her voice barely a
whisper, "I won't be able to?" Her face contorted and fresh tears
gathered in the corner of her eyes.
"Willow," Giles began, "I'm sure that Buffy will be just fine.
After all, this isn't the first time she has managed to ?"
"Mr. Giles?"
"Yes." Giles stood to meet the doctor that had quiet magically
appeared before them. "I'm Rupert Giles."
"It seems that Miss Summers ?"
"Buffy." Willow corrected, interrupting the doctor coldly
without looking up at her. The doctor paused for a moment, taking in
the sight of the three of them. Giles had blood on his cloths but the
girl; the girl looked as though she had bathed in the young Summer's
blood. For the briefest of moments she could feel the young girl's
pain, but quickly forced the thoughts out of her mind.
"Of course, Buffy then," the doctor started once again. "As
I'm sure you both know, Buffy lost quite a bit of blood but I'm afraid
that is the least of our worries. It seems that the wooden stick was
the better part of Buffy's night." The doctor paused as her eyes
drifted guilty to the floor. "I'm sorry but Buffy is in a comma."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sorry." The doctor repeated letting her eyes settle for a
moment once again on the girl.
"Can we see her?" Willow asked.
"Yes, of course but not for long and only two people at a
time. The room is quite small."
"Thank you, doctor." Giles offered as she turned to leave.
Quietly Giles turned and sat once again in his seat letting out a long
sigh.
"Do you-"Zander started stealing a quick glance at Willow who
sat hugging her knees.
"No, you and Giles go ahead." She said simply without looking
over at her friend. Silently Giles and Zander stood and started
moving
toward Buffy's room. Willow sat alone, left to her thoughts. <You
can't leave us Buffy! You can't leave me!>
For the better part of an hour she had pleaded silently to her
friend not to leave her alone in this world, not to die. Endless
images flashed before her eyes causing her stomach to knot in worry.
"It's a pity." A voice intruded into her thoughts. She slowly
raised her head to see a man standing mere feet from her, a mask of
concern on his face as he mocked. He stared down at Willow as he
spoke. "I'm sorry about your slayer friend child."
"Huh?" The fact that he knew she was the slayer caught her off
guard.
"The fact that you are here tells me the slayer is alive
although I'd imagine she is hurt pretty badly."
"Who are you?"
"I'm the boogie man." The sinister little man said with a
raspy
chuckle.
"What?"
"Oh dear, you don't know who the boogie man is? You know, the
monster under the bed and so on!"
"I know who the? who are you really?" The little man laughed
lightly, casually taking a seat beside Willow.
"Honestly, I didn't believe the master when he told me that
the
slayer would live. I thought coming here was a waist of my time, but
here you are. Her right hand man!" he paused for a moment. "Or woman.
Oh, bloody hell, you know what I mean. The little bitch is here!"
"Buffy is? Buffy is fine." Willow started as she sat up in her
seat. "I don't know what you're talking about. It's my aunt that
has.." she paused trying desperately to finish the lie in her
mind. "My aunt is having her tonsils removed today." She finished,
showing the little man her resolve face.
"In intensive care?" he mocked.
"That's-"
"I don't mean to be rude but I have things to do, slayers to
slay and all!" He chuckled softly at his humor. "It's been lovely!"
He breathed into her ear just before planting a light kiss there.
Pain coursed through her head and down her spine to every
nerve
ending in her body. Fire flowed through her veins and darkness
quickly
surrounded her mind, engulfing her being.
Somewhere in the darkness she heard a voice, "Sweet dreams
Love."
"Night, night." she heard her mind say back to the raspy voice
then let the sleep take her.
