Re: Alyson & Sarah question
Ah, the perennial question.
Serious theory: Sarah, after the (relative) failure of "Cruel
Intentions" and (total) flop of "Simply Irresistable" resented Aly's
"American Pie" success and took it out on the friendship. Possibly
exacerbated if Aly resented the Season 5 shooting schedule getting
jerked around so Sarah could shoot "Scooby-Doo".
Serious theory #2: After the filming of "Once More, With Feeling",
which wreaked havoc on both Joss and Sarah's schedules, they had a
falling out, and Sarah came to resent Aly's status as Joss's favorite.
Especially, if, as rumored, the trouble between her and Joss was in part
due to her reversing her decision and doing her own singing, instead of
using a vocal double, as planned. If SMG had to bust hump to learn how
to sing (and Sarah really worked *hard* in that musical--look at
"Life's a Show" and note the difference between her intensity and Amber
Benson, who's just "going through the motions" in the background) and
Joss still resented her for it, I can see her getting angry at Aly, who
completely ducked out of the singing, and whom Joss let get away with
it. (A mistake, IMO, since she's no worse than Nick Brendon, and the ep
*needed* a Willow song.)
Serious theory addenda: Any number of incidents created friction, and
Freddie Prinze, Jr, seeing a need to prove his manhood by "protecting"
Sarah, exacerbated it. Sure, usually it's the wife who makes the
husband drop his bachelor buddies as they go on, but it works the other
way, too.
'Shippy theory (my fave, of course): Sarah, who told TV Guide in May
2000 that she keeps her relationships private and when she goes to movie
premieres with Jerry O'Connell or **Freddie Prinze, Jr**, it doesn't
mean anything, is gay. (C'mon, she basically said she married her
beard!) She made a pass at Aly, got turned down, and things went
downhill from there.
Whatever happened, I miss the friendship, both for the WAFFs and for the
effect on the show. For example, all that chopping and cutting in the
B/W scene in "First Date" has me thinking that they rushed to film the
master shot, not caring how much of it was unusable, and then covered it
up with a load of close-ups, with Sarah not on the set for Aly's, and
vice versa. Ugh.
Dan
bummed
PS--Oh, wait! I forgot the ULTRA-Shippy theory:
Sarah and Aly realized they were in love sometime around Season 4, and
have embarked on an extensive coverup to keep it secret. Because if
they'd kept up all the **unscripted** touching of Seasons 1-2 once they
were involved, it would have been far too easy for people to put the
pieces together.
DeNile, it is truly the River of Life...
