One of the challenges in writing fanfic is keeping the characters in 
character while making any situation/storyline believable.  If you're 
trying to fit in a B/W relationship you might use the premise that 
they both had warm fuzzy feelings for one another but where afraid to 
act on those feelings...at first, of course!  Why?  Each might have 
feared how the other would react, what others might think or feared 
rejection that might've hurt their friendship.  Also, both of them 
were in relationships most of the time so when they realized they had 
feelings for their best friend the timing was bad, ala Lover's Walk.  
You use canon up to a point then deviate from the established 
storyline and you can do this in any other the 7 seasons.

Have fun with this, it isn't work!
