It was an identical thought process that lead to
Tony's (and later my own) conversion to B/W/X. You find more balance and
symmetry in Scooby ships (B/W, B/X, W/X, B/W/X) than in any other ship
featuring our core Scoobies (although T/X works well too).
We saw how Buffy and Xander handled it when they
thought Willow was dead (dead/turned) in Dopplegangerland. We (kinda) saw how
Xander and Willow handled it after Buffy died in The Gift. And it wouldn't take
a great leap of the imagination to see how Buffy and Willow would handle Xander
dying.
The only match for a Scooby is a Scooby (or
two).
