Wow, bold choice for a starting place, but I'm glad to see 
someone tackling it.  You've got me interested.
I still have a problem with first person in general in fanfic, but 
perhaps that's just me.  I just don't believe that people make 
such spontaneous, clear insights about themselves.  In my 
opinion, it would be more believable to describe the scene in 
such a way that we, the readers, understand what's going on 
with Buffy at an unconscious level without her explaining it to us.
(btw, I would be interested to hear what others think about the 
use of first person.)
In any case, I look forward to more.
