My fellow 'shippers,

"How does posting parts as replies make finding a fic easier?"

It doesn't make finding the fics easier. It makes finding all of the
parts of a fic easier once you've found any one part. And it only
applies to reading the fics in the groups message archives.

This is true, but personally I've become more and more a fan of groups that have some guidelines for posting fiction such as include Fic in subject and designate pairing. It's amazing how much easier this can make navigating an archive.

Subjects like: FIC: The Island (4a/?) B/W PG is a lot easier to find and group than subjects like Re: untitled. Also for me, it means it's easier to color code. Since I keep an archive of my favorite newsgroups locally in Eudora, it helps to, overtime, weed out the random conversations, and just keep the fiction. So typically 3-4 times a year, I go back and remove all conversations (not that they weren't enjoyable, its just that they are over).

I find this to be an easy thing to do in some groups, and a pain in others. It almost always boils down to groups that request fiction be posted using a basic template versus those that don't. Groups that do request it typically have writers follow a simple format that they can expand upon:

Subject includes FF or Fic as a designator, the title, the part, and the pairing code. The body includes:Title, Author, Fandom (with mixed groups), Pairing, Episode Spoilers, and Rating.

This makes combing through an archive, even if it's 30,000 records, lightning fast.
