As the Subject says, I'm about to say something positive about
season's 6 & 7. So please don't bother reading if you're one of the
many that HATE the two seasons.
Ok, here goes....
A little more space...I'm about to say something nice....
Ok, here goes for real this time...
I've been watching Season 6 on DVD and I'm absolutely loving it (the
whole of it, not some of the individual eps) this time around. I don't
care for the drug mataphor aspect of Willow's descent. I do however
love her rage/vengefulness at Buffy's shooting and Tara's death. I
don't take it as a slap in the face against B/W. I actually see it as
the one of the consequences of "Choices". Its an acceptable outcome
for the Willow character IMO and at the same time it explores the
absolute feeling of rage one must be enveloped with after the brutal
death of a loved one. Why shouldn't it be willow. I think lots of
individuals would take on a vigilante role, without the flaying of course.
Yep, it was like Giles in Passion, but with a lot more power, and
without the years of regret stemming from his Ripper days. This is
EXACTLY what Giles would have done in his Ripper days under the
circumstances.
Giles should have seen this coming. He'd been grooming Willow to take
over his responsibilities for some time. He'd planned on leaving in
early S5, wanting Willow to have all the info in his books at her
fingertips. She protested his claim that Buffy didn't need him as her
Watcher, saying SHE needed watched. Fortunately, Buffy talked him out
of leaving.
A year later, though, Giles was grieving, and did what he'd planned
the year before, returning to England and leaving Willow to take over
his responsibilities. Lost in his own grief, he didn't realize that
Willow was in the same shape emotionally he was, and he was leaving
her with a Hellmouth to keep under control, with only her own
abilities and a robot she was constantly having to repair to do it.
Now, what would Ripper have done under the circumstances? Willow
moved Heaven and Earth, and it turned out she did what was neccessary.
So, Buffy's back, and Giles came back to town, and chewed out Willow.
Her response should have set off the alarm bells. How would he have
responded at her age? He did the worst thing he could do under the
circumstances (feeling he was just weakening Buffy by being there),
and left, again.
Season 7 had some holes. That being said, it also contained some of
the the BEST episodes of the entire series and for that, I applaud it.
7.5, 'Selfless" is awesome. I love learning about the beginnings of
Anya. I love that she didn't run back into Xander's arms at the end.
She was stripped to nothing but was eager to figure out who Anya this
human this time around would be.
"Conversations with Dead People' is also a personal favorite. I
love the similarites within Dawn, Willow and Buffy's journey's
throughout the ep.
"Get it done" is very exciting. I love learning of the slayer
origin. I love that Willow and Spike had to face their fears, and
accept the darker sides of their psyche at the time that buffy
realized the darness of the slayer origin. Plus theres time travel...
fun.
Finally, I think that spreading the slayer power to all the emerging
potentials was a good idea. I'd love to see that made into a series.
I think if Joss were not so inlove with Firefly/Serenity, we would
have seen more. When BtVS had his attention is was flawless.
Agreed, on all counts.
