Bad Girls was first and that was Xander who, unwillingly, brought them together.

I was thinking FHT, with Willow gushing over the new person in Buffy's
life. "You need to find the fun, B... uffy". Willow was very
pro-Faith, until Faith started monopolizing Buffy's time, whereupon
she became very jealous. And, somehow, she never seemed to get what
she was having this female equivelent of a pissing contest with Faith
was over :)

So, that's why we didn't get X/B, huh?

Now, THERE'S one of the unsolved mysteries of the series. The series
originally seemed set up for Xander to be the male lead and eventual
love interest. The Freshman seemed a perfect set up for it, which, I
suppose, is why Anya was rushed back in. Joss was dead set on pushing
Riley down our throats, after all. Joss, unfortunately, didn't learn
his lesson, there, in S7, since he proceeded to push Wood and Kennedy
down our throats in a Riley-like manner. The problem was he had these
romantic subplots in mind involving these new people he was bringing
in, but he had characters that had established layers that, naturally,
should have been acting differently. Instead of letting the
characters develop relationships organically, he forced his pre-set
romance on them, and it just didn't ring true, in a lot of cases. Sometimes, the chemistry just wasn't there, as in the cases of B/R and W/K.
Joss thought the audience just wasn't over B/A when it came to Riley,
but that wasn't it, really. It was just that, while Sarah's chemistry
with Blucas was OK, she had much better, and more romantic, chemistry
with pretty well the rest of her co-stars. Similarly, the W/K
chemistry just didn't work the way the W/O and W/T chemistry did. I
just couldn't buy Willow being head over heels over Kennedy the way we
were supposed to.
B/F and B/S had such convincing sparks because they started off
entirely chemisty based. B/F started with the writers noticing how
Sarah and Eliza played off each other, and it got worked into the
scripts. B/S certainly wasn't planned, but, again, Sarah and James
just played off each other so perfectly you couldn't help but see a
romantic spark. Sarah, Aly, and Nick had such a great chemistry
between them that it seems improbable that we didn't end up with SOME
combination, there. Then, there was the problem of making Giles
completely a "father figure" to Buffy and Willow, but intentionally
casting an attractive, charismatic, older guy in the role who's resume
included Frank N. Furter in a long run with The Rocky Horror Show. The way he'd play off Sarah and Aly, and vice versa, just didn't come
off as a father/daughters thing, hence requiring the "inches of
seperation" rule, which the show often went ahead and violated.
I agree with Angel and Riley, but I can't remember at all that she has tried to get Buffy engaged with Spike. And I really hope I ever do.

Something Blue, Season 4. If anyone in the audience was unaware of
the chemistry, before, they weren't, after that.
