Spike wasn't helpless, though.  This is someone who spent a century in
a relationship with Dru, remember.  Remember what she was like.  He
had some pretty twisted demony views of love.  He invited the
punishment.  "That's it...  Put it all on me"  He thought she needed
to get all this out, and she did, to a degree, but not like that.  As
Buffy later put it about vamps, "Sex and death and love and pain -
it's all the same damn thing to you".  But, that's also a problem
Slayers tend to have.  This sent me back to Season 3, and Consequences...

Faith:  Yes. You know exactly what I'm about 'cause you have it in
you, too.

Buffy:  No, Faith, you're sick.

Faith:  I've seen it, B. You've got the lust. And I'm not just talking 
about screwing vampires.

Buffy stops in her tracks.

Buffy:  Don't you *dare* bring him into this.

Faith:  (taunting her) It was good, wasn't it? The sex? The danger?
Bet a part of you even dug him when he went psycho.

Buffy:  No! (continues walking)

Faith:  (follows) See, you need me to toe the line because you're
afraid you'll go over it, aren't you, B? You can't handle watching me
living my own way, having a blast, because it tempts you! You know it
could be you!

Buffy has had enough. She stops, faces her and backhand punches her in 
the jaw. Faith comes up smiling wickedly.

Faith:  There's my girl.

Buffy:  (tries to get away) No. I'm not gonna do this.

Faith:  (doesn't let her go) Why not? It feels good. Blood rising.

Season 6 Spuffy was Seasons 3 and 4 Fuffy taken further, at a time
when Buffy gives in to her Faith-like aspects, and actually goes along
with her seductive dark mirror for a while.  But, it goes further than
that.  The more Faith-like Season 6 Buffy had been forshadowed since
Faith first arrived in Sunnydale.  Faith gave us a lot of insight into
Buffy, and, in turn, the depressed Buffy of Seasons 5 and 6 told us a
lot about why Faith was the way she was.  

But, Buffy was still together enough to realize there was something
very wrong about what she was doing.  That's why she had to be the one
to break things off with Spike, because it was bad for her, and bad
for him, even if he was incapable of understanding that.
