I exactly know what you mean. It's only one comparison. And it's only 
coming from the fact that Spike is a vampire. I can give you a lot 
more comparisons between Xander and Spike; which is based on 
personality.

Spike is not helpless, I agree. He's a manipulator. He uses words as 
his power against the slayer and mostly anything else. Xander does 
that too. The big difference between Xander and Spike is only that 
Spike has a demon inside and is soulless. Xander does not have that 
darkness inside him what all the other do have. Xander didn't 
understand Faith and the danger which was inside her.

Spike/Dru = VampXander/VampWillow.

Everything about Spike is modelled after Xander. Spike is the vampire 
version of Xander. Faith is modelled after Buffy AND Xander. Faith is 
Buffy who she would have been if she hadn't had any friends.
