That's one reason I don't read these AU 'Everyone's Human' fics.  But
that's just me.

Not a big fan of the uberfics, myself.

Fic, itself, hasn't died, but there's less interest in Unconventional
Ships, particularly slash ones.  Relationship fics tend to center
around the conventional ships.  Of the femmeslash unconventional
ships, Fuffy's still going strong, still producing a lot of fic. 
Slash, of any sort, has always had a major credibility problem, since
it mostly involves characters clearly defined as straight.  Most
people will see a heading for a slash pairing involving canon hetero
characters, and immediately dismiss it with an "Oh, come ON...",
before moving on to a Spuffy fic.  

Mostly, people seem to be writing more adventure related stuff,
sending the cast off to new missions.  Crossover fic has built a
following.  A lot of my favorite fics, lately, have been HP
crossovers.  There's a series that oldscout's been writing that I've
especially been enjoying.  Of course, all these years of Fuffy and
Wiffy conditioning have warped me to the point where I see femmeslashy
elements everywhere where Buffy's concerned, so I'm thinking she and
Tonks make a cute couple  :)
