Re: Fuffy Fic

Hello Everybody,

Yikes!  I didn't even know the term OTP and it turns out I got one!  Well, at least as far as Buffy is concerned.  I can cheerfully trash all her canon 'ships as well as Fuffy.  But Willow, I cannot.  Despite my Wiffy preferences, I still really like Oz and Tara.  Okay, I'm fully on the 'Hate Kennedy' bandwagon, but still.

I understand that canon Buffy couldn't be gay.  They didn't want to send the message that 'a powerful woman doesn't need a man.'  But they ended up sending a different message: a powerful woman can't get a man.  Buffy never had a satisfactory relationship for the entire run of the series and was resignedly single for the series finale.  Both finale's really, seasons five and seven.

So it falls to us--the 'shippers--to give Buffy the happy ending she deserves.  Some feel it's the happiness clause and rewrite it.  Some like Spike so they completely rewrite his character for a Spuffy ending.  Some like Riley--well, theoretically anyway, I've not seen it--but someone *could* write a B/R happy ending.

The rest of us play 'What if?' games.  Not far outside the strictures of canon, just taking some minor liberties with the characters.  Subtext flowed rather freely throughout Buffy, especially the early seasons, so it's an easy game to play.

But it's far too easy to become too attached to a pet pairing.  The line between defending your OTP and attacking everyone else's is easy to cross.  Let's try to avoid attacking.  Some of us enjoy other pairings as well.  There may actually be someone here that likes Riley and/or Kennedy.  Let's be better than those hate filled boards and try to be more inclusive.

Even Wiffy seems to fall into multiple camps.  Some like to see fics that start after the series while others want to pair the girls up much earlier.  I am definatly of the 'earlier is better' camp but I still read fics set much later.  It's all a matter of taste.

Sure, Fuffy might be more obvious in the fandom, but it's partly because we're rather low profile.  How many of us have published fics outside of IKOLY and these boards?  I could name a dozen of my favorite Wiffy fics that are available only in our Wiffy corner of the web.  We have only ourselves to blame.

So that's my New Year's resolution:  Writing more fics and publishing them more widely.  I'm off now to put my "BB&B" up on FF.net so we have some fics there.  Let's all do the same.

They met again and quickly the kiss grew steamier.  Willow's hands began to roam across Buffy's back as Buffy entwined her fingers in Willow's hair.  Time stretched as the embrace grew more passionate.  The girls broke the kiss but didn't separate, just leaned their foreheads together and panted.
