The hints that the Slayer power was from a darker place started here,
picked up in Season 3, began being explored in the last episodes of
Season 4 and the first episode of Season 5, before being fully
explained in Season 7.  

In the Buffyverse, the Afterlife does exist, and, it seems, there are
very nice Afterlifes.  But, this being a Lovecraftian Mythos, the
supernatural power comes from a time before the concepts of good and
evil came about.  The Old Ones were primal and amoral.  The power they
left behind isn't good or evil unto itself, but JUST power.  What
Buffy always seemed to know, and what Willow and Faith had to learn,
was it's what you DO with the power that counts.
