This is, as I was reminded, one of my favorite episodes. I knew, when I
was talked into watching it when it first showed, by a friend who loved
the movie, that it was a show I had to keep watching. From the first
scene where the bad boy (who's now a CSI in NY, btw) gets killed instead
of the 'innocent' blond girl, this episode carefully sets up each
character's introduction and the themes and style for the whole series.
We're introduced to Buffy through a classic horror filled Slayer Dream
that quickly transitions into a sunlit first day at a new school typical
teenage girl. Giles from the start has no real authority over Buffy.
In fact, all the quirky, pop referenced, soon to be labeled 'Joss speak'
dialog is at first mostly reserved for Buffy/ Giles interactions. I
agree with Howard on the vast difference between Buffy and Xander's
early interactions and Buffy and Willow's. It was clear from the start
that Buffy and Willow would be best friends; and who knows, maybe more.
<g> We get some key items brought over from the movie- Buffy burned
down a school gym and was kicked out, she has all the popular girl
criteria and could be again but has learned that there are more
important things in life, she's acted as a Slayer before but wants out.
Willow's geeky side and self conscious quick wit is established.
Xander's nature is given to us: when told to go, he runs in to help pull
his friends to safety. Oh, and he eavesdrops, jumps to conclusions and
stumbles into things a lot. (as we'll get to see again and again) Giles
and Angel are still a work in progress, but the bad guys, Hellmouth, and
sunny California paradise have been established. "Come on, this is
Sunnydale, how bad an evil could there be here?"
