Unlike the town itself, UC Sunnydale is supposedly based on UC
Santa Cruz but I haven't seen any proof (yet). Oddly enough, to

I'd forgotten about that one. Thanks for pointing it out.

He bailed because of work (that's what he told Joyce anyway...)

She also spent the summer with him in LA between season's 1 and
2
He even drove her back. (I need to watch that episode again... I
don't remember that scene in the transcripts with her father in
it...)

Although he wasn't mentioned much, I don't believe he became a
stereotypical absentee father until Season 5 and Dawn's
appearance. I blame the monks.

But... he certainly made more appearances than Willow's
father... who just gets a single mention in 144 episodes.
