Re: 'Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight' Discussion
Hello Everybody!
This episode is about isolation and there are three different examples
shown. The first is obvious: Marcie's descent into invisibility. The
second is also quite direct: Cordelia's trite, yet seemingly heartfelt
"I'm all alone in a crowd" speech. The third, more subtle one is Buffy.
Xander and Willow reminisce, leaving Buffy out. Buffy has fond memories
of her Prom Princess, Fiesta Queen past that Xander and Willow cannot
share. Her teen-speak and Americana leave Giles behind. Cordy and the
Cordettes--the Sunnydale equivalent of her old Hemery crowd--all look down
on her. All that was missing was something slayery distancing her from
her mother.
Canon Cop Facts:
Angel talks to Giles in the Library. Odd that his entering the school
doesn't come into question until the second season's "Passions."
General Stuff:
This is the first of several boys' locker rooms shown in Sunnydale High.
Either Sunnydale High is constantly remodeling or Mutant Enemy keeps
forgetting where they've shot before.
If Cordelia's parents are so damn rich, why is she doing her dress fitting
in school? Her home--or, at worst, the shop where she got the
dress--would seem a much more fitting place.
When Buffy was talking to Willow about Marcie's band history with the
flute, am I the only one who had an "American Pie" flashback? I didn't
think so.
In Sunnydale, the most recent missing student is six months ago?
Actually, even more nonsensically, it was the list of missing *and dead*
that Marcie was most recent on. If so, then there was a six-month gap
between "The Puppet Show" and this episode.
A question about invisible people. Not trying to be pornographic here,
but did her clothes become invisible too? If not, there's a nekid girl
running around! (Okay, maybe I went a little porno there for a moment.
Sorry.) If they did, has she been wearing the same clothes for the past
six months? Eew.
This is really sad. Marcie Ross is, alphabetically, is right next to
Willow Rosenberg--as evidenced by their pictures being next to each other
in the yearbook Buffy recovered. In many of my high school classes, we
were seated alphabetically; therefore, it's likely that Willow sat next to
her in at least one of the four classes that they shared. Yet, she still
went unnoticed. While not supermodel gorgeous, she was kinda cute. You'd
think that Willow would have noticed her...I would've noticed her.
Wiffy Stuff:
Despite the subtle emphasis on Buffy's isolation, there were still plenty
of shared glances in this episode. True, it's not very 'shippy, but it's
evidence of their close friendship. Even when she's the most alone, she's
got her Willow.
Wiffy Fic Possibilities:
Marcie seemed to know a few secrets, like that Buffy is the slayer. She
dropped that little bombshell in front of Cordy, though Ms. Egocentric
missed it. What if she had other secrets to taunt Buffy with then? Some
knowledge about Buffy's true desires that she could reveal in front of
Cordy, perhaps? Or maybe she could try to distract Buffy with something
about Willow's crush? Either way, once the secret is out, something could
come from it.
Willow, yet again, almost died. Heartfelt confessions could result from
such a near tragedy.

Just for fun--and to prove I'm a true geek--here's the page from Marcie's
textbook in the final scene.

Assassination and Infiltration

CASE EXAMPLE 1: RADICAL CULT LEADER AS INTENDED VICTIM
August 2, 19XX. She's not a girl who misses much: She's well aquainted
with the touch of a velvet hand like a lizard on a window pane. The man
in the clouds with the multicolored mirrors on his hobnailed boots. Lying
with his eyes while his hands are busy working overtime. A soap
impression of his wife which he ate and donated to the national trust. "I
need a fix cause I'm going down, down to the bits that I left uptown".
Mother Superior jumped the gun. Joy is a hot revolver, yes it is. When I
hold you in my arms and I feel my finger on your trigger, I know no one
can do me no harm because Joy is a hot revolver, and he is afraid of the
monkeys who are in possession of digital skeletons of Swiss cheese.
[This is an accurate transcription of the page, including the odd
punctuation, the capitalization mistakes, and the misspelling of
'acquainted'.]
The bulk of the text is "Happiness is a Warm Gun" by the Beatles, with the
title phrase replaced with "Joy is a hot revolver." Well, between 'August
2, 19XX' and the final comma, it's the lyrics. After that, it starts to
get really weird.
The rest of the book appears to be "Practical Investigation Techniques"

] of which chapter 7 is "Infiltration." The tiny glimpse of that page
shows that the layout of the fake chapter 11 was patterned after the
actual chapters of the book. Here is Amazon.com's scan of the chapter 1
page, which shows that it's the same book.

]
I know I'm being too nitpicky but the page on the right is always odd
numbered. So, when the class was directed to page 54, that would have
been a left hand page, not the right hand page shown. In the book they
used, page 54 was blank and chapter 5 started on page 55.
I'm such a geek.
