Oh, I can defend Season 6.  My favorite is still Season 3, though.  

My attitude towards Season 5 is I'm not a big fan of unrelenting doom
and gloom.  Harmony and Olaf the Troll provided what little fun the
season had, but they were gone halfway through.  So, the rest of the
season was death, grief, doom, gloom, angst, more death, more grief,
more doom, more gloom, more angst, and, above all, no HOPE.  

But, I recognize that it was a necessary part of Buffy's story, how
she had to hit bottom before she could rise, again.  Season 5 was
about giving in to despair and becoming suicidal.  Season 6 was about
the recovery, rediscovering life is worth living, and can be
beautiful.  Of course, the recovery process was a long and hard one,
as one doesn't recover from suicidal depression overnight.  

The overall message of this series was never "Life sucks and then you
die", so it didn't surprise me that it didn't end on that note.
