Pointless comment in case the preview function cuts out the boosted spoiler
space.

Well it was sitting by the sink the the girl's bathroom, so it was probably
just forgotten there. You'd be amazed what gets left by the sinks in
girl's/women's restrooms, IDs, diamond rings, not to mention the usual
hairbrushes and makeup. Which is also a pretty good clue that whoever made
the thing was female. Unless, of course it really was just a plot
convenience. In past seasons I would have assumed that they were setting up
a later plot, but after last season....

Anyway, you can see Buffy pick the thing up when she first enters the
bathroom. You can even see that it's a chicken bone with a feather tied to
it, which, with her past experience, would get Buffy's attention.

Totally with you on the Spike thing though. How terribly convenient that he
just happened to be lurking under the school, and he just happened to know
exactly what was causing the problem, even though he had nothing to do with
it. What, a little bird told him? Or in the basement maybe a little rat?
