Hmmm...  I feel your pain.  As it happens, now that I got the
remaining Buffy DVDs I didn't have for Christmas, I'm watching the
whole series straight through.  I've just finished Season 2, which
means I'm about to start the fabled Season 3.  While there was B/W fic
before it, this would be the season where the ship would really begin
sailing.  Willow was still innocent in those days, of course, but this
was where we started really getting into what makes the Slayer tick.
