FW: [SlayerPups] Joss's comments on Tara - spoilers
Hi all,
I got this from the SlayerPups list tonight and thought it was rather apropo
considering the furor over Tara's death last week as well as it's effects on
gays/lesbians on TV always "being portrayed in a negative light".
I'm rather certain I'll get flack over this, but Laura and Joss' comments
below are right on the mark.

Okay, that should be enough. If it isn't, to bad. This is what Joss had to
say last night
--
Thought I was out, but.... had one more thing to add. I killed Tara. Some of
you may have been hurt by that. It very unlikely it was more painful to you
than it was to me. I couldn't even discuss it in story meetings without
getting upset, physically. Which is why I knew it was the right thing to do.
Because stories, as I have so often said, are not about what we WANT. And I
knew some people would be angry with me for destroying the only gay couple
on the show, but the idea that I COULDN'T kill Tara because she was gay is
as offensive to me as the idea that I DID kill her because she was gay.
Willow's story was not about being gay. It was about weakness, addiction,
loss... the way life hits you in the gut right when you think you're back on
your feet. The course of true love never did run smooth, not on my show.
(only Dennis Franz has suffered more than my characters.) I love Amber and
she knows it. Eventually, this story will end for all of them. Hers ended
sooner.
Or did it......?
Yeah, it did. "

Sorry but I've been out of the loop with work lately. I have tons of SP
emails yet to be read, including some on this very subject, I'm sure, but
seeing a post with "Joss' comments on Tara"... well, I just had to catch
this one... <G>
...and I agree with Joss, which I know will not find favor with many of you
on this list. I say I want equality for gays and gay characters. Well, I got
it this time... and it's hard, just as is life. Equality is not
preferential treatment -- no quotas, no "making up for past wrongs"...
which only wrongs someone else -- and I appreciate Joss' recognizing the
difference and having the guts to act on it and accept the responsibility
for that decision.
I got what I asked for. I also now realize what Spock said when he told his
fiancee that "'having' is not always as good as 'wanting'... it is not
logical, but it is so...." <G>
